Le projet de recherches Workflow, mené à l’écal par Tatiana Rhis, Guy Meldem, et Julien Tavelli et David Keshavjee (Maximage), s’intéresse aux nouvelles technologies de l’objet imprimé. Il consiste en une série d’expériences qui tentent de déjouer les technologies de production aujourd’hui à disposition, provoquer le hasard et les accidents afin d’obtenir des résultats inédits. Plus que de se questionner sur le détournement possible des outils, Workflow en explore la technicité, les modes de fonctionnement et les failles. Ce programme poursuit ainsi le champ d’expérimentations ouvert par le studio suisse Maximage depuis 2008. Déjà dans le cadre de leur diplôme à l’écal, Julien Tavelli et David Keshavjee associaient les techniques manuelles et numériques pour développer leurs propres outils de production, et notamment leurs propres modalités d’impressions. De leurs expériences sont nées, entre autres, la typographie « Programme », et la publication « Les impressions magiques », qui apparaît aujourd’hui comme un objet manifeste de leur démarche.
Un des premiers résultats du programme Workflow est la création d’une série de profils colorimétriques permettant de convertir des images numériques pour l’impression avec une, deux, trois, quatre ou cinq couleurs d’accompagnement, qu’elles soient basiques, pastels, fluos ou métallisées.
Le travail sur ces profils a deux visées. Il sert à sensibiliser les étudiants de l’écal à la gestion et la théorie de la couleur; mais il permet aussi, et ce pour la première fois, l’automatisation d’opérations et de réglages jusqu’alors réalisés au cas par cas et manuellement sur les logiciels de retouches et de PAO.
Revendiquant une solution « novatrice » et « professionnelle » pour le traitement de la couleur, l’écal et le programme Workflow lancent en 2016 le site www.colorlibrary.ch, qui propose ces profils à la vente. La plateforme apparaît comme une bibliothèque en ligne présentant une grande variété de profils aux différentes combinaisons colorées. Les différents profils s’affichent à l’écran, appliqués aux photographies de l’iranienne Shirana Shahbazi, qui semblent rejouer les codes des images types Photoshop—du papillon à l’œil et de la nature morte à la cascade.
À partir de l’analyse de la structure de cette plateforme, des langages esthétiques et terminologiques qu’elle convoque et de leurs limites, nous ouvrirons plusieurs champs d’investigations, plus largement liés à la question des outils et des modes de production des images.

Dès 1275, on statue dans le Royaume de France sur les droits des stationarii (copistes) et des librarii (libraires) (Friedrich Karl von Savigny (auteur et éditeur), Histoire du droit romain au Moyen-Âge, Tome III, Charles Hingray, Paris, 1839 (1815), p. 415) fraîchement émancipés du joug de l’Église.
C’est qu’il s’agit, avant même l’invention de l’imprimerie, de régler la circulation des écrits et la définition de ceux qui sont en charge de leur inscription et de leur diffusion.
C’est que, bien avant la figure moderne du typographe repérée par Robin Kinross au XVIIe avec The Doctrine of Handy-Works: Applied to the Art of Printing de Joseph Moxon (Robin Kinross, La typographie moderne : Un essai d’histoire critique, B 42, Paris, 2012 (1992) p. 11-12), les graphistes, les copistes et les typographes comme Geoffroy Tory ou Henri Estienne l’Ancien ont aussi été libraires et éditeurs en réfléchissant leur pratique et les contenus qu’ils amenaient sur la place publique.
Or il semble qu’il soit temps de refaire le point sur cette ancienne tradition, alors que de plus en plus de graphistes et de graphic designers fondent leur maison d’édition pour défendre leur ligne éditoriale dans les deux sens que prend ce mot en anglais : à la fois dans le sens de l’editing et du choix et de l’ordonnancement des matières graphiques, mais aussi au sens du publishing, soit une certaine éthique de la diffusion et de la publicité des contenus.

Depuis la fin des années 1990, Batia Suter collectionne des livres — de seconde main pour la plupart — qu’elle acquière en raison de leur iconographie, de sorte à constituer une banque d’images qui est localisée dans les rayons de sa bibliothèque. L’ensemble est devenu le matériau de base d’une œuvre qui consiste à présenter ces images selon une logique de montage visuel, en leur attribuant de nouvelles modalités d’apparition et donc de nouvelles possibilités d’interprétation.
Parallel Encyclopedia est à ce jour le travail le plus conséquent de l’artiste. Mené depuis 2004, il a pris la forme de plusieurs installations et de deux ouvrages imposants édités par Roma publications en 2007 et en 2016. Chaque version du projet se caractérise par l’association de centaines d’images hétéroclites (historiques, artistiques, scientifiques, techniques) regroupées en fonction de liens typologiques et formels. D’un dispositif à l’autre, les modalités de présentation de ces images extraites de livres se renouvèlent : séquençage et sérialité des pages reliées ; constellations ou, au contraire, séquences linéaires d’images reproduites et exposées aux cimaises ; constellations ou séquences linéaires de pages de livres ouverts et déposés sur des supports plans. Bien que les images exposées soient les mêmes, ces diverses possibilités d’exposition en déterminent des lectures différentielles.
Au-delà de la fascination qu’un tel projet peut engendrer, ce texte tentera d’en saisir toute la complexité. Pour ce faire, le travail de Batia Suter sera resitué au sein d’une histoire des pratiques iconographiques qui traverse différents champs d’activités et de connaissance. On s’attachera par ailleurs à la trajectoire des images réunies dans Parallel Encyclopedia et aux effets des processus de remédiation auxquels elles sont livrées. Enfin, il s’agira de dessiner une figure de l’artiste en « éditrice » et d’étudier à la fois la fonction du design graphique dans son travail et la place que l’on peut attribuer à ce dernier dans le champ du design graphique, auquel Batia Suter n’appartient pas directement, mais qui traverse ses productions et auquel elle s’est confrontée concrètement dans le cadre de sa collaboration avec le graphiste Roger Willems pour la conception des deux volumes de l’encyclopédie qui, de fait, est aujourd’hui une référence tant pour de nombreux artistes que pour de tout aussi nombreux designers graphiques.
